Steven R. Leu Criminal Justice Memorial Scholarship
Steve Leu earned an Associate Degree in Police Science from NTC in 1977. He retired from the Marshfield Police Department in 2014 and passed away December 2021.
Steve was a very active officer serving as a firearms instructor, armorer, crisis negotiator, Honor Guard member, as well as on the board of directors for the Wisconsin Crisis Negotiators Association. He was well known for his shooting skills, earning many accolades over the years at the Wisconsin Professional Police Association state shooting competitions. Steve sincerely enjoyed sharing his knowledge and experience in not only shooting, but all aspects of the job with others. Always approachable, Steve promoted positive community interactions, answering questions and explaining situations within confidential boundaries at any given time.
Always seeking education, his patience and knowledge in firearms and tactical training knew no limits. He believed in knowing and performing the job well, mentoring and leading others and using appropriate tactics to achieve safe outcomes (and if you knew Steve, using humor was high on the list). Steve truly believed that it isn’t what you get out of life, it’s what you give. He spent countless hours involved in community volunteer and fundraising opportunities before and after retirement. He believed that everyone should be involved in and contribute to the community in which you live, work, and raise a family.
Steve believed in making a difference in everything he touched, many times simply saying:
“It doesn’t cost a thing to be nice.”
Law enforcement is a demanding career with many current false narratives. It is a profession that needs to be encouraged, respected and honored. This scholarship is an affirmation of just that.
My wish is that the recipient of this scholarship will share Steve’s philosophies and carry on his legacy.
