Ben and Elizabeth Stubinski Memorial Scholarship
Ben and Elizabeth (Betty) Stubinski, were both born in 1920, and became children of the Great Depression. They grew up knowing what hard work is and what struggling for what a dollar meant. For them, education was limited and the money they earned as children was given to their parents. When WWII started, Ben enlisted and then wrote Betty a note to meet him in Chicago, and they eloped. After the war, they returned to what they knew, farming. Ben attended NTC and received a farm trainee’s certificate in 1952. When Betty was 50, she came to NTC and worked hard to get her GED, proving that learning is a lifelong pursuit. They believed in giving to the community, a legacy they passed on to their children. This endowed scholarship was established in 2012 by Ben and Betty’s daughter, Sue Dirks, also an NTC graduate, to honor their history and their memory, and continue to help learners for years to come.
